Abstract
Activated charcoal was demonstrated to adsorb aflatoxin B1 [a carcinogen] in an efficient manner in vitro at a neutral pH; 1 mg aflatoxin was adsorbed by 100 mg activated charcoal. The complex appeared to be stable. Destruction of the aflatoxin by alkaline conditions was confirmed, and a large measure of destruction was also noted at acid pH. Implications of the adsorption phenomenon include prevention of systemic absorption of aflatoxins via the lung and gastrointestinal tract, treatment of aflatoxin poisoning and decontamination of aflatoxins in foodstuffs.
