IN VIVO STIMULATION BY ADRENOCORTICOTROPHIN (ACTH) OF RAT ADRENALS IN RELATION TO DIETARY FAT

Abstract
SUMMARY: Administration of ACTH did not change the amount or pattern of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the adrenals of rats given a fat-free diet, or diets containing hydrogenated or unhydrogenated peanut oil. The amounts in the adrenals of total polyunsaturated fatty acids, dienoic, tetraenoic, pentaenoic and hexaenoic acids decreased while trienoic acids increased in the adrenals of rats given the fat-free or hydrogenated peanut-oil diets. The secretion of corticosterone by the adrenal cortex following administration of ACTH in vivo was significantly reduced in rats maintained on a fat-free diet.
