To the Editor: —It was to be expected, following the article on the "Actions and Uses of Dinitrophenol" by Drs. Cutting, Mehrtens and Tainter (The Journal, July 15) and general newspaper and magazine comment throughout the country, that it would attract a great deal of public interest and inquiry as to its therapeutic application. A university professor, who is much overweight and who had been on a great many reducing diets with indifferent results, consulted me, with the purpose in mind of using this drug. The dangers of the drug were pointed out to him, and he read the article inThe Journaland the editorial comment in the same issue carefully but still evinced a strong desire to use this substance. He stated that he realized the possibility of body damage and our present incomplete knowledge of the pharmacology of the drug, but in a spirit of "heroism"(?) he
