Who should teach nurses? The debate

Abstract
Last year. Nursing Standard published an article (1) which posed the question, who should teach nurses? In the article. Pat Hughes argued that the changes occurring in nurse education in the Nineties, including links with higher education establishments, higher academic standards required of Project 2000 students and moves towards specialist teaching, pushed this question to the fore. Non-nurse teachers can bring expertise to nursing students that nurse tutors may not possess, she explained, but expert theory may be of little use unless its application to nursing can be made explicit. In addition, a scenario where academic, high status teaching is carried out by non-nurses, and lower status application of theory to practice by nurses, cannot be discounted; this could also have implications for career prospects of nurse teachers. The issues underlying the question, the author suggested, should be widely debated by the profession.
