Abstract
Partial or complete substitution of cardio-pulmonary function may be effected with an extracorporeal pump-oxygenator apparatus. Blood is aerated by the injection of tiny O2 bubbles. The excess gas is removed from the blood by a constant delivery centrifuge. Two pumps convey blood to and from the apparatus. Pumping action is obtained by rollers repeatedly compressing a circular segment of collapsible tubing. The respiratory function of 11 dogs was replaced by the machine for periods of 12-35 minutes with no deaths during perfusion. Six of the last 9 animals were permanent survivors.
