Surface densities of states in the planar uniform background model

Abstract
Local densities of states inside and outside a metal surface are calculated and discussed for the simple square-step potential and the planar uniform background model. Quantitative results for the narrowing of the energy width of the occupied electron states outside the surface are presented. The relevance of the results for experiments on the electron capture by deuterons scattered at surfaces and for ion-neutralization spectroscopy is discussed.
