Abstract
L-cells were irradiated with 500 r and immediately after irradiation treated with highly polymerized isologous or heterologous deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). After a 2-week incubation period the numbers of treated and nontreated survivors were compared. Treatment either with isologous or heterologous DNA led to an increase of survival of the irradiated cells up to a 2-fold value. The same treatment did not influence the plating efficiency of the nonirradiated cells. The survival curve of cells treated with isologous DNA displayed an increase of the extrapolation number if compared with the survival curve of nontreated cells. No difference in the MLD between both survival curves was observed. It is suggested that the breakdown products of DNA could be involved in the mechanism of this phenomenon. Keywords
