Abstract
The author reviews several aspects, and empirical consequences, of the p-n interaction as it relates to the structure, phase transitions and collectivity of medium and heavy nuclei. The NpNn scheme is reviewed as background material while the emphasis centers on a discussion of a related quantity, the P factor, and on the relationship of the integrated strength of the p-n interaction to the empirically observed 'saturation' of B(E2) values in the mid-shell regions of deformed nuclei. Keywords
