Abstract
The temperature variation of the magnetic susceptibility (χ) of HBT was studied in isotropic, nematic, smectic B and solid phases. Abrupt changes in χ and Δχ were observed at various phase transitions. An unusual decrease in χ with decreasing temperature was recorded during nematic–smectic B transition. Keywords
