Abstract
Phase transitions from the Al62Cu25.5Fe12.5 icosahedral quasicrystal to the B2-type phase induced by irradiation with 120keV Ar2+ ions at room temperature and at liquid-N temperature have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The experimental results show that the irradiation e ect is dependent on the dose, dose rate and irradiation temperature. To achieve the same icosahedral quasicrystal-to-B2-type phase-transition effect, a higher dose is needed when irradiation is carried out at lower temperature. In addition, the transformation from icosahedral quasicrystal to the amorphous phase was observed only when irradiated at lower temperatures.
