Abstract
The magnetic rotation spectrum of nitric oxide in the 44 000‐cm−1 region, the 0, 0 “γ band,” has been photographed with about 0.07‐cm−1 resolution yielding fairly clear line shapes and relative intensities. The spectrum has been synthesized line by line using classical formulas for the dispersion of the refractive index and the absorption coefficient through each Zeeman component as shifted in a field of 2500 G. For the ground state Π no perturbation of the field‐free wavefunctions was incorporated; for the upper state 2Σ complete coupling of the spin to the field was assumed. This picture led to complete agreement with the details of the observed spectrum.
