Time of Fertilizer Application on Desert Grasslands

Abstract
Studies were conducted to determine the proper time to fertilize desert grasslands with respect to summer rainfall patterns in 1965 and 1966. Three southern Arizona [USA] grassland sites were selected. Treatments were applied at various dates starting well before the start of the 1st summer rains. In general, fertilization after the start of the summer rainy season gave best results in 3 of the 4 studies. Applying fertilizer after soil moisture is present helps prevent fertilizer losses during a dry season. Maximum response of the fertilizer is assured because application is just prior to the time of greatest demand for nutrients.
