Abstract
Colonies of honey bees were sampled for Nosema apis spores at approximately monthly intervals over 26 months. The seasonal pattern of infection was similar to that in Europe and North America. There were differences from year to year in both the magnitude and timing of infection peaks. Nine apiaries, each containing the same three lines of bee, were sampled in the spring. There were significant differences in disease incidence between apiaries but not between lines of bee. It is recommended that colonies required to supply escorts for the export of queen bees should be treated to ensure freedom from Nosema.
