A POPULATION STUDY ON RENAL AND URINARY TRACT DISEASES

Abstract
A total of 3 998 persons aged 21–69, 49% men and 51% women, have been screened for symptoms of renal and urinary tract disease. The screening was free of charge, as was any medical examination undertaken because of pathological findings on screening. Each screened person completed a form at home, answering questions relating to previous diseases of the said kind, or symptoms thereof, and hypertension. The completed questionnaire, together with urine specimens, was sent to our laboratory. Because of findings on screening 1 633 persons (40.6% of those screened), 35.4% men and 64.6% women, underwent nephrological examination. To check the quality of the screening methods used 643 persons (16.1% of those screened) with negative screening were subjected to nephrological examination. Such checking does not seem to be customary in health surveys.
