Abstract
Methods were sought for generating abbreviations that are easy to learn and remember. At present, abbreviations for automated systems often reflect the idiosyncratic preferences of a small group of people. To remedy this situation, research was undertaken to evaluate alternative abbreviation methods and to specify an algorithm for their systematic generation. The resulting algorithm is built around a truncation method with fixed-length abbreviations. Keywords
