Abstract
The following proteins, (1) leucokeratin, (2) melano-keratid and (3) rhodokeratid were isolated from human hair. Leucokeratin is white and soluble in cold dilute NaOH. White hair consists entirely of (1), blond hair contains much and black hair very little. Melanokeratid contains a melanin. It is insoluble in cold dilute NaOH enabling separation from (1). Blond, brown and black hair consist of varying proportions of (1) and (2). Rhodokeratid is the chromo-protein of red hair. Solubilities of mammalian hair color resemble those above. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
