Suppression of J/psi and Psi' Production in High-Energy Pb on Pb Collisions
Abstract
The anomalous suppression of J/psi production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158A GeV observed recently by NA50 is explained as due to the transition to a new phase of strong J/psi absorption, which sets in when the local energy density exceeds about 4.0 GeV/fm^3. The observed decrease in psi'/psi in Pb-Pb collisions relative to nucleon-nucleon collisions can be understood as arising from a larger effective cross section for psi' than J/psi for absorption by soft particles and by matter in the new phase. Keywords
