Induction of labour with an unfavourable cervix—a comparison of 2 mg prostaglandin E2pessaries with amniotomy and oxytocin infusion

Abstract
Summary Prostaglandin E2 pessaries containing 2 mg were used to induce labour in 98 patients with Bishop scores of 4 or less and the results compared with those from 88 patients with similar Bishop scores who had labour induced with conventional amniotomy and oxytocin infusions. Prostaglandin treated patients had fewer caesarean sections, especially for fetal distress and failed induction, compared with those who had amniotomy and oxytocin infusion (p<0˙01). The induction-labour interval and the duration of labour were shorter in the prostaglandin group and there were fewer babies born with low Apgar scores (P<0˙01).
