Abstract
Experimental and theoretical studies of the nonresonant lower-hybrid beam-plasma instability have been carried out. The instability has a maximum growth rate when the phase velocity of the wave along the magnetic field lines is comparable to the electron thermal velocity. Electron heating associated with this instability has also been observed. Keywords
