Abstract
Using a variational method and an approximate equation for the confinement factor, a simple expression for the effective refractive index of the TE0modes in a symmetric double heterostructure (DH) laser is obtained. The relative error is smaller than 1.2 percent. Its applications are discussed.Keywords
