The myth of anechoic renal sinus fat.

Abstract
Eight patients with anechoic areas in the central renal sinus were examined by nephrotomography, and hydronephrosis was excluded. In each case, renal sinus lipomatosis appeared to be present, suggesting anechoic fat. When further evaluation with cyst puncture or computed tomography was performed, peripelvic cysts were found in all cases. Peripelvic cysts may mimic sinus fat nephrotomographically and produce an anechoic appearance; when only sinus fat is present, the renal sinus appears echogenic.
