Abstract
Normal dogs and dogs with experimental cholestasis were inoculated intravenously withEscherichia coli.A study of the curves for bacterial blood clearance and bacterial appearance in the bile followed. In the normal dogs, bacteria rapidly disappeared from the blood; no bacteria were detected in the bile of these animals. In the jaundiced dogs, not only did the bacteria disappear from the blood less rapidly, but also appeared in the bile almost simultaneously. The different possible mechanisms for this activity are discussed. The results obtained may lead to a better understanding of the great incidence of infection in cases of biliary obstruction. Keywords
