EFFECT OF RUMEN DEGRADABILITY OF SUPPLEMENTS ON INTAKE OF BARLEY STRAW BY STEERS

Abstract
Untreated canola meal (U-CM) was lost from nylon bags suspended in the rumen more rapidly than was formaldehyde-treated canola meal (F-CM), or fish meal (FM); on the basis of a pepsin solubilization measurement, the latter two preparations would be digested to a significant extent posterior to the rumen. Steers supplemented with U-CM tended to consume more barley straw (7.7 kg/day) than those supplemented with F-CM (6.9 kg/day), and consumed significantly (P < 0.05) more straw than those supplemented with FM (6.4 kg/day).
