Carabid Damage to Weed Seeds Found in Indiana Cornfields 1

Abstract
Four species of Carabidae found in Indiana cornfields were tested to determine if they would damage weed seeds in laboratory trials. Evarthrus sodalis sodalis Lec., Pterostichus lucublandus Say and P. chalcites Say damaged relatively few seeds, and Harpalus pensylvanicus DeGeer readily damaged seeds by feeding. When 16 species of weed seeds found in Indiana cornfields were offered to H. pensylvanicus . 4 species of seeds were left undamaged, 6 were moderately damaged, and 6 were heavily damaged; significant differences existed in the number and species of seeds damaged. Preference tests between acceptable seed species showed that H. pensylvanicus preferred giant green foxtail ( Setaria viridis var major (Gaud.) Postp.) over other species tested.
