Abstract
The woodworking adz is a fundamental tool of the Dalton culture in northeast Arkansas and dates between 8000 and 6000B.C. It appears to be as early as the earliest true adzes previously known, those found in the Lyngby culture of northern Europe and in sites of the early village farmers of the Near East. The Dalton adz strongly suggests technological adaptation to a developing hardwood forest which involves relatively permanent settlements and satellite extraction camps. Keywords
