Abstract
Electron energy distributions in multiphoton ionisation experiments show several peaks, which correspond to the absorption of several more photons than are needed to ionise the atom. The author shows that this reflects the distribution of atomic excitation at the time the electrons are emitted. The broadening and shift of the electron spectra measure the shift of the initial-to-final-state energy difference caused by the strong field. Outgoing channels with low-energy electrons become closed at high fields; new 'continuum-bound' electronic states appear. These states may have a chaotic motion. Keywords
