Dissociation of Tuberculin Hypersensitivity as Mediator for an Accelerated Pulmonary Granulomatous Response in Rabbits

Abstract
Summary: Data are presented which support the concept that classical tuberculin hypersensitivity is not the mediator of the accelerated pulmonary (macrophagic) granulomatous response in rabbits. After sensitization by means of heat-killed BCG, rabbits that are desensitized with tuberculin can produce an accelerated granulomatous response when challenged with BCG intravenously. Rabbits sensitized intradermally with nonliving BCG in saline become positive reactors to tuberculin but fail to produce a pulmonary granulomatous response when challenged intravenously with BCG. Finally, rabbits sensitized with killed BCG fail to develop a typical pulmonary granulomatous response when challenged with OT.
