Abstract
A new criterion for the stability of moist bent-over plumes is discussed, using a recently derived Brunt-Väisälä frequency. In the case of neutral stability, it is shown that the previously used saturated adiabatic lapse rate must be corrected by up to 2 or 3 K km−1, depending on the environmental temperature profile.
