For the first time, there are measures ofreproductive ill-health which include morbidity as well as mortality, and they give a better grasp on the make-up of the overall burden in terms of geographic area. The weaknesses of the approach relate to both the conceptual framework and the technical content. It is possible to address some of these weaknesses, particularly in terms of the technical content. Improving the technical aspects of the methodology and seeking a broader consensus, greater transparency and multiisectoral, multi-disciplinary approaches with regard to the conceptual framework will be critical if we are to begin to address the issue of equity and make decisions on priorities.
