Abstract
The gray limestone facies of the Italian Dolomites is confined to the lower Liassic and rests unconformably on the last Triasina-bearing beds of pre-Liassic age. Middle Liassic crinoidal limestones overlie the gray limestone and are overlain by upper Liassic chemical sediments. The only evidence for upper Liassic age strata is the presence of the ammonites Harpoceras discodes and Hammatoceras insigne. For the most part, the upper Liassic was a period of nondeposition.
