Abstract
Whereas there are numerous regulations dealing with groundwater monitoring of hazardous waste landfills, there are virtually none dealing with air monitoring, but their promulgation by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency is imminent. As a result, hazardous waste landfills would be required in the near future to monitor air quality at their site and that monitoring will probably involve the determination of the concentrations of both particulates and selected hydrocarbons. This article discusses the potential air quality problems that landfills cause, the release point of pollutants and transport processes of air contaminants. Finally suggestions for an air monitoring network are made with a view to determining conditions that lead to a degradation in air quality.
