Abstract
To the Editor: We would like to inject a word of caution regarding the recent extrapolation1 of the pathophysiologic mechanism underlying salt wasting by sweat glands in cystic fibrosis to a "generalized basic transport defect" responsible for much of the exocrine pathology in this disease (May 19 issue). The hypothesis attempting to unify salt wasting by sweat glands with obstructive disease in other exocrine glands or epithelia is simplistic and neglects major discrepancies. Furthermore, its publication may give false hope that the "genetic" defect in this disease is about to be understood. The major argument for extrapolation of a decreased . . .Keywords
