Determination of the Kerr constant in optically active liquids and chiral discrimination in menthone

Abstract
The electro-optical response of optically active liquids was analysed using the Jones matrix of the actual Kerr cell. On that basis the Kerr effect of D-, L- and DL-menthone was examined. The racemate shows 4% lower Kerr constant as compared with the enantiomers.Keywords
