Abstract
Navicula sect. Johnsonieae sensu Hustedt included Navicula scopulorum Bréb. which has been shown to have included two discrete species, one now transferred to Berkeleya Grev., B. scopulorum (Bréb.) E. J. Cox, while the other corresponded to Okedenia scopulorum sensu Mereschkowsky. This species is compared with other members of Hustedt's section, with Okedenia inflexa (Bréb.) Eulenst., usually placed in the Cymbellaceae because of its symmetry, and with other species which have been placed in Okedenia Eulenst. Some specimens, under different specific epithets, were examples of Berkeleya scopulorum, others showed similarities to “O. scopulorum” and O. inflexa and will be placed in the same genus; a few belonged to other genera or were not available for examination. The genus containing “O. scopulorum” and O. inflexa must take the name Climaconeis Grun. following the rules of priority, with C. lorenzii Grun. as the type of the genus. “O. scopulorum” is synonymous with Frustulia scalaris Bréb. and becomes C. scalaris (Bréb.) comb. nov. An emended generic description of Climaconeis is given with a list of the species belonging to it, the necessary nomenclatural changes and their synonyms. A key to the identification of species within the genus is also provided. This publication has 11 references indexed in Scilit:
