Abstract
The method of atomic absorption spectroscopy by attenuation of the resonance radiation from an iodine atom lamp at 206.23 nm (I(5p46s(2P))→I(5p5(2P° ½))) is described for the gas-phase kinetic study of electronically-excited iodine atoms. The collisional decay of I(52P½), generated by the pulsed irradiation of CF3I, has been investigated and the quenching constants for a number of gases are reported and compared with those obtained from other time-resolved studies of this atomic state.
