Abstract
Embryonated eggs of Lecithochirium rufoviride (Rudolphi, 1819) Lühe, 1901 (Hemiuridae) from the stomach of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla (L.), developed into cercariae in agreement with the description of Cercaria vaullegeardi Pelseneer, 1906 in the prosobranch Gibbula cineraria (L.) (Trochidae). Since 1906, when C. vaullegeardi was originally described from G. cineraria no snail has apparently been found naturally infected with this species. The cystophorous cercaria of L. rufoviride is compared with those of L. furcolabiatum (Jones, 1933) Dawes, 1947 and L. fusiforme Lühe, 1901, which develop in other species of Gibbula and whose cercariae previously have been identified as Cercaria vaullegeardi. Cercaria vaullegeardi is described using light and scanning electron microscopy.
