Abstract
Dormancy in tung buds was prolonged by treatment with lanolin emulsion alone, the buds remaining about 12 days longer in a stage in which they are not susceptible to injury by a temp. of 28[degree] F. 7 1/2% of the buds were killed by this treatment. Crisco (partially hydrogenated vegetable fat) was approx. 1/2 as effective as the lanolin emulsion and produced less injury. a-Naphthalene acetic acid and 2 of its derivatives, as well as indole-3-acetic acid, were the only compounds of the 29 organic substances tested in lanolin emulsion that prolonged dormancy more than did the lanolin emulsion alone. The percentages of dead buds resulting from these more effective treatments ranged from 12.5 to 52.5; the % for the lanolin emulsion was 7.5. Repeated applications of 0.5 and 0.25% of a-naphthalene acetamide in lanolin emulsion were more effective than single applications in prolonging dormancy and also killed more buds. The injury was slightly greater with the 0.5% conc. No significant differences in response were noticed between the 0.5 and 0.25% concs. The 0.01% conc, was approx. 1/2 as effective as the 0.5 or the 0.25% and produced less injury. The indications are that 2 applications of 0.25% a-naphthalene acetamide in a lanolin emulsion made about 30 and 15 days prior to bud expansion would give better results in prolonging dormancy in tung buds. Since considerable injury occurred whenever blossoming was materially delayed, no combination of conc, with date of application was found practical for orchard use. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
