PROPHYLACTIC TREATMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL RENAL HYPERTENSION WITH RENIN

Abstract
Studies were made of the prophylactic effects of partially purified hog renin, inactivated hog renin, dog renin, rabbit renin, inactive human renin, and liver extract prepared like renin, in exptl. renal hypertension in the dog. Hog renin completely protected 2 dogs, partially protected one, and did not protect a 4th animal against the development of exptl. renal hypertension following constriction of the renal arteries by the Goldblatt technique. Inactivated hog renin protected one dog but did not protect 3 other animals. Dog renin completely protected 1 dog, partially protected 1, and did not protect 2 dogs. Rabbit renin completely protected one dog against exptl. renal hypertension. Inactive human renin offered no protection to 2 dogs and liver extract was likewise ineffective in 3 dogs. Sixteen untreated control animals all developed exptl. renal hypertension following constriction of the renal arteries. The mechanism of these prophylactic effects is not apparent at present. They may be due to renin or to some other substance in the partially purified renal extracts. Antirenin is almost certainly not involved.
