Abstract
Is petroleum asphalt, as made from western U. S. crude oils, carcinogenic? Asphalt, as used in the U. S., is obtained by refining petroleum by distillation. Pooled lots from 6 samples supplied by Southern California refiners were used. C-57 black mice of both sexes were given this material by 2 routes, painting (asphalt in small amounts of benzene) and injection 6.2 cc. of 1% suspension in olive oil), with suitable controls. In 68 painted mice, 12 epidermoid carcinomas formed at the site of application. In 62 injected mice, 8 sarcomas occurred, 1 of which was successfully transplanted to a female C-57 black mouse. No epidermoid carcinomas were found in 63 benzene-painted mice, nor any sarcomas in 60 olive oil injected mice. These neoplasia conform to all the conventional histological criteria for malignancy. Keywords
