Abstract
A rapid method for appraising deer ranges was developed in eastern Texas from 1956-64 in late winter visits of 1 day each to a number of deer ranges. The method comprises 3 steps: browse inventory and utilization, palatability classification, and calculation and interpretation of indices. The unique aspect of the method is the comparison of utilization of 3 palatability classes as an expression of light, moderate, or heavy stocking. The survey is suggested as a tool with which to achieve sound deer management decisions and hunter support for them.
