Abstract

In this paper we deal with the interrelationships between organization and location in the printed circuits industry of Southern California. We begin with a brief conceptual sketch of the problem of vertical integration and disintegration, paying particular attention to economies and diseconomies of scale and scope, and to the repercussions of external transactions costs on locational patterns. We then provide an empirical outline of the geography of the printed circuits industry in Southern California. A detailed statistical analysis of subcontracting behaviour and locational relations is developed, and the factors underlying scale and scope effects identified. It is shown that subcontracting and spatial agglomeration go hand-in-hand in the printed circuits industry. The paper ends with a sketch of the differential impact of economies/diseconomies of scale and scope on a series of individual subcontracting functions. SCOTT A. J. et KWOK E. C.
