Abstract
C. perfringens was grown in a medium which promoted rapid and abundant sporulation. Impression smears of hourly samplings were mordanted with KMnO4 and stained with safranin, with and without prior hydrolysis in HC1. Over a 12-hour period a well defined cycle occurs during which the forespore arises terminally, enlarges, becomes encysted and is finally encased within a drastically contracted sporangium. The cyto logical aspect of the mature spore is presented, and the value of a synchronized cycle for cytochemical and metabolic studies of the proc ess of sporulation is suggested. Keywords
