Oesophageal ulceration due to doxycycline

Abstract
Several medications have been implicated as causes of oesophageal ulceration and strictures. The association of acute oesophageal ulceration with tetracycline and in particular doxycycline therapy was first recorded in 1975 (Bokey & Hugh). A review of the literature has shown that the diagnosis is invariably made by endoscopy, and virtually all the reports state that barium studies (where performed) have been normal. In view of the marked changes seen at endoscopy in these cases, this observation is surprising. We report a recent case in which the barium swallow was positive. The appearances were felt to be suggestive of malignancy.
