Abstract
Electron microscopical observations of “gomphonemoid” diatoms have shown that two members of the genus Gomphonema C. A. Agardh, G. olivaceum (Lyngb.) Kütz. and G. quadripunctatum (Østr.) Wislouch, do not exhibit the features typical of the genus Gomphonema but have those which are characteristic of the genus Gomphoneis, described by Cleve in 1894. It is therefore suggested that these two species be removed from the genus Gomphonema and placed within the little known genus of Gomphoneis as Gomphoneis olivaceum (Lyngb.) Cleve comb. nov. and as Gomphoneis quadripunctatum (Østr.) Cleve comb. nov. Keywords
