Abstract
Hypercorticism, retardation of growth, and suppression of pituitary-adrenocortical function have been the predominant side effects of chronic continuous steroid therapy for idiopathic juvenile nephrosis and rheumatoid arthritis and allergic diseases in children. Modification of the steroid nucleus has eliminated the problem of sodium retention while preserving anti-inflammatory activity. Various schedules of intermittent adrenocorticosteroid administration appear to minimize the retardation of growth in children and the loss of pituitary-adreno-cortical function. Keywords
