Abstract
Three aspects of the umbilical cord are considered[long dash]the anatomy, anomalies and, most important, prolapse. The three types of prolapse of the cord, the occult, forelying, and actually prolapsed cord, are discussed; and the etiology, course, prognosis and diagnosis are presented. In the treatment of prolapse of the cord, both prevention and active therapy are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the status of the cervix as the crux of the treatment of prolapse; the Trendelenburg, Sims'' and the knee-chest positions are mentioned as temporary but important aids in management. The indications for vaginal delivery and cesarean section are outlined.
