Abstract
Recent studies suggest that the negative recency effect in final free recall is a function of the type rather than the amount of rehearsal given to terminal list items. From such findings it was predicted in the present experiment that by varying the type of rehearsal, positive recency in final free recall could be obtained. 24 Ss were presented with 14-item lists, and in all cases the 1st 10 items of each list were silently learned. During the presentation of the 10th item, Ss were given 1 of 3 cues to indicate the method by which the last 4 items were to be studied. These methods were overt rehearsal, silent study, and generating verbal associations for each of the 4 terminal list items. In agreement with earlier studies, results indicate a positive recency in final free recall for associated items. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)Keywords
