Abstract
Histological studies of leaves of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) bearing feeding Therioaphis maculata demonstrated that the insect feeds by an intercellular insertion of its stylets. Feeding sites were found to be the vascular phloem and mesophyll parenchyma. Considerable quantities of saliva or other toxic substances were injected into the plant tissues and appeared to cause plasmolysis. Visible damage was greatest within the mesophyll and could be correlated with chlorotic spotting. The extent of damage resulting from phloem feeding is difficult to determine. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
