One Cartographic View of American Indian Land Areas

Abstract
A careful cartographic and geographic scrutiny of anymap frequently reveals errors and design flaws. These problems,together with the amount of spatial generalization required ata given scale, affect how the untutored map reader perceivesand interprets the map. This paper is a self-critical analysis ofthe shortcomings of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs' map,Indian Land Areas. The potential misinterpretations are evaluatedin the context of a discussion concerning the complexAmerican Indian landscape. Un examen minutieux d'une carte révèle souvent desimperfections que ce soit des erreurs géographiques ou encoredes erreurs dûes à la représentation cartographique desphénomènes. Ces problèmes, ainsi que la généralisation cartographiquepar rapport à une échelle donnée, affectent non seulementla perception du lecteur de carte non avisé mais égalementson interprétation de la carte. L'auteur analyse la carte IndianLand Areas produite par le 'U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs' etsur laquelle il a déjà travaillé. Les imperfections et les faussesinterprétations potentielles sont étudiées en tenant compte de lacomplexité des paysages indiens américains.
