Abstract
The [VF6]4– ion has been detected in which the vanadium(II) ion occupies a substitutional site in the lithium and sodium fluoride lattice. For a small fraction of the ions the octahedral field is subject to tetragonal and ortho-rhombic crystal field distortions. The g-values of these ions indicate a crystal field splitting 10Dq=k× 18,000 cm.–1, where k is the orbital reduction factor. Superhyperfine structure from the 19F nuclei of the co-ordinated fluoride ions indicate that σ and π covalent bonding are of equal magnitude. Keywords
